{"id":203,"date":"2017-04-18T16:25:27","date_gmt":"2017-04-18T16:25:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/davidwilsonupnorth.com\/?p=203"},"modified":"2022-10-21T23:49:11","modified_gmt":"2022-10-21T23:49:11","slug":"enough-of-the-my-indignant-outrage-is-bigger-than-your-indignant-outrage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kyledwilson.com\/davidwilsonupnorth.com\/2017\/04\/18\/enough-of-the-my-indignant-outrage-is-bigger-than-your-indignant-outrage\/","title":{"rendered":"ENOUGH of the \u201cMy Indignant Outrage is Bigger than Your Indignant Outrage\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-205\" src=\"https:\/\/kyledwilson.com\/davidwilsonupnorth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/5x5apr.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"453\" height=\"302\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kyledwilson.com\/davidwilsonupnorth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/5x5apr.jpg 780w, https:\/\/kyledwilson.com\/davidwilsonupnorth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/5x5apr-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kyledwilson.com\/davidwilsonupnorth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/5x5apr-768x511.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 453px) 85vw, 453px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Preface<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The inspiration for this piece is a VERY simple premise, but one that seems to have been somehow lost in the growing din of cultural noise.\u00a0 I may not be the smartest guy in the world, but you won\u2019t find me wandering around downtown wearing mismatched shoes and talking to buildings.\u00a0 And though I don\u2019t see myself as being particularly wise, much less visionary, I think I am a relatively reasonable man who has tried to pay attention during my schooling.\u00a0 This I say today:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\">Our daily behavior with each other is clear indication of our future together.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:right;\">David Wilson \u2013 April 18, 2017<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Entirely Self-Serving Disclaimer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t about being preachy, this about collective accountability and mutual respect.\u00a0 As a society we\u2019ve often had leaders to serve as models for dignified, respected AND respectful behavior, people like Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas, Martin Luther King, and John Wooden.\u00a0 However, in that those men are gone, and that most of our current \u201cleaders\u201d are failing us miserably in that regard, each of us needs to embrace OUR responsibility to lead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We\u2019re on the Wrong Track<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To my friends and acquaintances, young and old, rich and poor and in between, Green and Blue, passive and impassioned, left and right\u2026, we\u2019ve been through a lifetime of experiences, together and apart.\u00a0 Through much of this time I\u2019ve been carefully reading our writings, listening to our words, watching our actions and reactions.\u00a0 And not just for the past several months, but for the past several years.\u00a0 Folks, I\u2019m convinced that much of the interactive social behavior we\u2019re increasingly adopting is not at all in our best interest, much less the best we can do.<\/p>\n<p>To be perfectly frank, I am sick of the divisive vitriol that has become commonplace in our culture, especially (though not exclusively) when the discussion involves anything with any measure of inherent emotion, which pretty much includes everything we talk about.\u00a0 Reading comments between my friends, I get a daily dose of pejorative remarks and even vile insults hurled back and forth at each other.\u00a0 In addition, I see from everyone what I think is too much of \u201cmy side is always right and your side is always wrong!\u201d\u00a0 Dammit, just STOP IT!!\u00a0 MY side is with my fellow American Citizens, all 325 million of us.\u00a0 I think we have enough enemies in the world already, and it is therefore not in our best interest to make enemies of each other.<\/p>\n<p>For the past year or more, and especially since November, this phenomenon has continued to increase, so much so that one can no longer engage in substantive discussion, much less watch a selection of prime time national news without experiencing some sort of visceral reaction, often due to utter disbelief and even anger at the content and context of what is being reported.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Know, We Don\u2019t<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve said this before; One thing about which I am certain is that there is far too much certainty in this world.\u00a0 We\u00a0<em>know<\/em> what happened in Ferguson, we <em>know<\/em> what happened in the election, we <em>know<\/em> what happened in Flint, we\u00a0<em>know<\/em> what happened on that stupid United Airlines flight&#8230;\u00a0 Folks, we don\u2019t know squat!\u00a0 We don\u2019t know even half of what <em>really<\/em> went on with any of these situations.\u00a0 We get carefully selected bits and pieces of information and conflicting reports, all delivered with respective \u201cspin.\u201d\u00a0 And as a result, what we end up with is analogous to knowing a little bit of karate, which provides us just enough unwarranted confidence and false bravado to pick a fight, only to receive a good (and probably well-deserved) beating.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Hard Job for a Worthy Cause<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>American Citizenry done properly is not an easy job.\u00a0 Nowhere in the US Constitution does it say (much less imply) that this will be easy, or even fair.\u00a0 But what it does is provide unmatched opportunity, and with great opportunity there is typically legitimate challenge.\u00a0 Given our already inherent challenges, I don\u2019t think it serves any of us well to constantly rip to shreds everyone with whom we disagree, be it the President, the Congress, or even our friends and neighbors.\u00a0 Let\u2019s abandon the ad hominem attacks, and instead discuss data-driven, historically-supported better ideas and thoughtful suggestions, with measurable outcomes.\u00a0 Let\u2019s try to make our case without making enemies, the politicians and political commentators do enough of that already, and seem to be perfectly happy pitting us against each other.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, I don\u2019t think any of us will ever achieve the America we desire as long as each side consistently views the other side with contempt.<\/p>\n<p>As always, just my opinion, but all of us ARE really in this together.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Preface The inspiration for this piece is a VERY simple premise, but one that seems to have been somehow lost in the growing din of cultural noise.\u00a0 I may not be the smartest guy in the world, but you won\u2019t find me wandering around downtown wearing mismatched shoes and talking to buildings.\u00a0 And though I &hellip;
